Birth of Venus by Botticelli
Birth of Venus by Botticelli
In this sculptural interpretation of Botticelli’s Italian Renaissance painting “Birth of Venus”, Venus (Roman Aphrodite) is illustrated being born from a shell based on a well known myth about her birth when Cronus castrated his father Uranus and tossed his severed genitals into the sea. From them, Venus arose from the sea foam near Cyprus or Cythera on a giant shell and walked to shore. Venus was the goddess of love, desire and beauty. She enjoyed trapping other gods in love affairs, and she herself was not left out of the game. Being the lame god Hephaestus’ wife, she embarked on an affair with Ares (Mars, god of war). Made from resin, marble finish, 11.5”H. 5552, $35
