Frank Lloyd Wright's Saguaro Forms and Cactus Flowers Stained Glass
The back-lit geometric stained glass mural in the foyer of the Arizona Biltmore, titled Saguaro Forms and Cactus Flowers, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1926-27, Mr. Wright was commissioned by Liberty magazine to create a series of cover designs, one for each month of the year. His imaginative graphic designs were rejected: deemed too 'radical' by the publisher. Saguaro Forms and Cactus Flowers first appeared on the cover of an anthology of lectures Wright gave at Princeton in 1930 entitled Modern Architecture. In 1973, the Arizona Biltmore experienced a devastating fire. During the reconstruction, the graphic design was selected from the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives to be rendered in glass and produced in the colorful and decorative symmetry seen here. Made from kiln-fired stained glass, guaranteed to never fade, wooden frame, on a wooden stand, 11.25W x 12.25H. 5024, $94

The Service Star Flag Small Stained Glass
Over the years, many guests to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens have asked about the symbolism of the stained glass plaque in F.A. Seiberling's office. The white rectangle with the blue star and red border is commonly referred to as "The Service Star" or "Service Flag". First used unofficially in World War I by private citizens, the flag symbolized the fact that the family using it had as many of its numbers in the armed forces as there were stars in the flag. In 1918 Massachusetts had issued specifications for 10 different kinds of stars to indicate "lost in action" and other conditions. The only one that ever found much favor was "died in service". In 1942 and 1968, the United States government prescribed regulations for use of similar services or "production" flags by business and other groups whose were in the service. The flag is here reproduced in kiln-fired stained glass, guaranteed to never fade, made in the USA, metal frame, hanging chain included

Butterflies and Foliage
American, John LaFarge (1835-1910) was an accomplished artist in drawing and painting who lectured extensively on Fine Art and wrote about his memories of his past travels to places such as Japan and the South Seas. His artworks illustrate his fantasies of flowers and especially foreign places. LaFarges major accomplishment -- as the greatest innovator in the history of modern stained glass -- occurred in 1879 when he discovered and patented the techniques for making opalescent glass, which is the fusion of small bits of glass in order to create stained glass images which previously had to be painted with metal oxides. Made from kiln fired stained glass and measures 8.25W x 18H. 4226, $92
